The Dark Portal Necklace is inspired by the basin stone that can be found at the back wall of the passage grave of Newgrange. The Neolithic people of the time built a passage grave with a cruciform chamber. Their incredible feat of engineering and architecture made it possible for the passage and chamber to align with the rising sun at winter solstice. At the winter solstice the sun hits the back wall where this basin stone sits, illuminating it. Human remains were found cradled in the basin stone at Newgrange. Archaeologists have speculated that this passage grave was reserved for the elite in society, as there are very few remains found at the site. There are other burial mounds surrounding Newgrange with much greater records of human remains. Due to the very clear preoccupation that this culture had with the sun, it is thought that at the winter solstice there was some kind of ceremony of light to facilitate the dead on their journey to the afterlife. The basin stone, a portal that cradled the soul.
