WHAT IS GOLD VERMEIL?
Unlike regular gold plating which is a thin layer of gold that is plated onto a base metal such as brass or bronze, gold vermeil is a thick layer of 18 carat gold on a sterling silver base. Gold plating can be put on any metal, but gold vermeil has to be done on silver. In relation to the thickness of gold used, gold plating has a minimum thickness of 0.5 microns, while gold vermeil has to be at least 2.5 microns, thus making gold vermeil a lot more durable.
